MISSION STATEMENT  | WENDELL CASTLE PROJECT

VISION

We envision the WCP as an internationally significant organization celebrating the intersection of art, woodworking, and furniture design by educating the public about Wendell Castle, teaching skills inspired by his work, and encouraging makers and designers to keep his legacy alive through their own practice. Located in Castle’s former studio, the WCP is a creative hub where people come from around the globe to learn, create, and connect.

MISSION

We provide classes and resources to help people experience and expand the creative legacy of Wendell Castle.

VALUES AND GOALS

  • We believe in the importance of preserving and promoting Wendell Castle’s innovative and pioneering work in furniture art.

  • In keeping with Castle’s artistic legacy, we place the highest value on the intersection of art, craft, and design.

  • Inspired by the original Wendell Castle Workshop that the artist founded in 1980, we host classes teaching a variety of woodworking and furniture design techniques in the studio where Castle worked for over 50 years.

  • We consider ourselves custodians of the stack lamination and carving techniques that Castle championed, including the CNC technology that he adopted in the latter part of his career.

  • We aim to promote scholarship of Castle’s work by preserving his archives (drawings, studies, models, books, photographs, and other archival documents) and making them accessible to students and researchers in person and the general public online.

  • We provide support for makers and designers by welcoming artists in residence to make use of Castle’s workshop and tools.

  • We value engagement with the local community and the general public, with a particular appreciation for underserved populations.

  • We aspire to excite and inspire all people, including those who lack experience in the arts, through outreach programming such as exhibitions, lectures, and screenings.

  • We value diversity and inclusion across instructors, staff, residents, and board members.
