Class description
This twelve-day class would be ideal for a person who wants to take their design development and fabrication skills to the next level. We will begin by understanding the ergonomics of seating, learning how to define visual language, and discovering ideas through drawing and model making (no previous skills are necessary in these areas). Our designs will focus on good composition/proportion and solve visual/function issues through simplicity rather than complexity. Once the design is complete you will translate your ideas into a buildable plan and we will spend the remainder of the class focused on the various fabrication techniques in wood which will lead to realizing the student’s own design.
Tools and Materials
This class will be a process of design discovery and so it will be difficult to determine which tools and materials a student may need before the class begins. Most of the tools needed will be available at the WCW. However, students should bring the following:
- PPE (safety glasses, hearing protection, dust mask/respirator, etc.)
- Drawing materials including pencil (Ebony brand recommended), drawing pad, eraser, small manual pencil sharpener (or knife)
- 3” combination square
- 12” combination square
- If you are local, please bring a cordless drill. We will have a number of these that will be shared.
Once final designs are determined students will be responsible for providing their own materials and can purchase wood from WCW or a local supplier.
