Join Tim for a weekend of exploration and experimentation as you learn five techniques to create visually engaging patterns and textures on wood surfaces.
Techniques will include
Embossing with custom steel stamping tools and how to make your own
Incised carving with vee tools and veiners
Working with thick veneer to create parquet and overlay patterns
Marquetry, including stack sawn and double bevel methods
Coloring carved patterns
Layering and carving through commercial veneer
We will also cover
Veneer substrates and edge banding
Pressing veneer
Scraper sharpening and use
Setting up the bandsaw to cut your own veneer
Scroll saw techniques and blade choices
Tim will bring his collection of sample boards and pattern books for inspiration, and there is always a lot of sharing of ideas in the classroom as students are influenced and inspired by one another. The techniques are easy to learn, and the emphasis will be on experimentation and spontaneity with students creating sample boards as a kind of sketchbook. Everyone will come away from the weekend with new ways to express themselves with five techniques that can be applied to tables, cabinets, boxes, and more.
