Class description

The designing and creation of curved elements can turn ordinary furniture into sculpture. Larger shops with more sophisticated equipment can rely on CNC, vacuum bag and steam-bending methods for the creation of sculptural elements, but for a small shop this can be daunting. This class will provide students with three methods for the creation of sculptural furniture that do not necessitate adding much tooling: sculpted surfaces, coopered curves and bent laminations. And while this is primarily a demonstration-based class, students will have the opportunity to create parts for both a sculptural table and cabinet with curved doors and a carved top. Students can use these methods to create a sculptural cabinet in the 7-day class that follows this course on June 3 – 9.

Students should bring:

  • Personal safety equipment, including eye and ear protection, apron and gloves.
  • Measuring devices, such as a ruler or tape measure
  • Pocket square
  • Adjustable bevel guide
